The Confraternity of Our Lady of Europe was setup to organise spiritual and social events. On top of the items ‘to do’ was the repair of the statue. The damage consisted of a missing head and arm and blows to the Child.

The historian, Juan Ledesma, narrates the various attempts made to ship the statue to Seville but were prevented by tempestuous seas. This was interpreted as: Providence would not allow the statue of Our Lady of Europe to leave. Instead, the sculptor, Pedro de Rueda, was commissioned to perform all repairs locally –in-situ.

Devotion developed also around the larger statue of Our Lady of Europe -kept to this day at the Principal Church of St. Mary the Crowned (presently a Cathedral). All canonical privileges, jubilees and benefices were granted to Her. This statue was specifically carved for this Church and enthroned when the Church was transformed from a Mosque to a Christian Temple.

The Confraternity decided to beautify the Church by placing a new statue of “Our Lady of the Angels” in the prime location of Our Lady of Europe, and the latter transferred to the rear of the Church. Yet, devotees continued to venerate Our Lady of Europe. Reports of miracles arose. People disagreed with this move and requested the Bishop’s influence upon the Confraternity.
