The Second World War was a time of great tribulation and suffering for many! Many experienced the life-threatening scenarios which only war can afford. Families were separated for diverse reasons. Through it all, devotion to Our Lady of Europe brought comfort, strength and rescue.
Devotees to Our Lady of Europe would pray as flying bombs rocketed into London.
Leni Mifsud, a local artist, painted a picture of Our Lady whist evacuated to Madeira.
So as to protect the image it was transferred to the Cathedral. Both statues were kept at the Lady Altar.
During this time, the Child would be dressed in brocade silk according to the liturgical season. It was later suggested that it would be simpler if a new clothed Bambino were to be carved. The Bishop agreed, so the Child today is the carved dressed Bambino sculptured by Francisco Moreira.
