In less than a century, Islam spreads from Mauretania to North Africa and begins to peep towards Europe.
In AD 710, Tarik Ibn Zayib -an astute Mauritanian military strategist- introduces his Moorish forces into the European continent via Gibraltar. In the same, he creates a fortress and transit point whereby he can replenish troops from Africa. Consequently, his strengthened and consolidated position enhances his northerly campaign.
Gibraltar is named after Tarik:“Gibel Tarik” (Mountain of Tarik).
The conquest of Gibraltar will prove a serious blow for the northern Visigoth Kingdom, such that would entail major changes in boundaries, culture and people.
As the Moslem troops settled, a Mosque and Tower were built at the southernmost part of Gibraltar. The construction would be offered in thanksgiving and signalled a more permanent possession.
